Lufthansa flights are renowned for their delectable cuisine, and I have a particular fondness for the service at Frankfurt airport, especially when I can watch the snow outside. However, on one occasion, I found myself struggling with severe sleep deprivation during a late-night flight, leading to headaches, fatigue, and a general sense of unease.
Desperate for some rest, I called the flight attendant over.
Me: “Could you please bring me some flavored yogurt, maybe 3 or 4 cups? I really need to sleep.”
Attendant: “I’m sorry, but we don’t have that. However, I can offer you some whisky.”
Me: “I don’t drink alcohol. I need something dairy to help me sleep.”
Attendant: “We do have some chocolates that might do the trick.”
Me: “But that’s too sweet. Will it really help? Is it milk chocolate?”
The attendant didn’t respond immediately but returned with a handful of chocolates.
As I began to eat them one by one, the first few were delicious and melted in my mouth. However, as I continued, the taste turned increasingly bitter and sour with each chocolate.
My fellow passenger, who had been observing the exchange, chimed in:
Passenger: “Those are whiskey chocolates, popular in Germany. They’re for people who want to avoid getting drunk but still need to relax. Since you mentioned you’re non-alcoholic and in desperate need of sleep, the attendant brought these for you. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine. In a few minutes, you’ll be fast asleep.”
Shocked by this revelation, my consciousness began to fade, and soon enough, I drifted off into a peaceful slumber.
